South Korea's Ji Dong-won plays on loan with AugsburgAFP LONDON -- Sunderland's South Korean international striker Ji Dong-won has joined German Bundesliga side Augsburg on a season-long loan, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.
January 3, 2013, 12:02 am TWN “Sunderland striker Ji Dong-won has completed a loan move to FC Augsburg,” read a statement on the Sunderland website. Ji made 21 appearances for Sunderland last season and scored two goals, including a famous late winner against eventual champions Manchester City in January 2012, but he has failed to establish himself this season. Speaking on Monday, Sunderland coach Martin O'Neill said the 21-year-old had struggled to adapt to the physical nature of English soccer. “All I can say just from the general viewpoint is it's been a frustrating time for him just recently,” said O'Neill. “He played in the Olympics — he didn't always start the games, I know, for South Korea — but perhaps after that goal against Manchester City a year ago, maybe he was hoping it would be lift-off time for him. “He's found it difficult to cope with the physical aspect of the game. But he has natural talent and it's really up to him.”
