Bayern Munich beat Greuther Fuerth 3-0 in Bundesliga

BERLIN -- Bayern Munich started their league campaign with a 3-0 defeat of promoted Greuther Fuerth, giving their Bavarian rival a rude welcome to the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Thomas Mueller put the visitors ahead off a rebound in the 43rd minute, Mario Mandzukic scored from another in the 59th, and Arjen Robben's shot took a deflection off the unlucky Thomas Kleine in the 78th.

Asked why his side failed to convert its few chances, Fuerth coach Mike Bueskens replied, “Because we're Greuther Fuerth and not FC Bayern.”

Another promoted side, Fortuna Duesseldorf, won 2-0 at Augsburg thanks to two goals from offseason signing Dani Schahin, who scored eight minutes after coming off the bench.

Eintracht Frankfurt celebrated its return to the top tier after a year's absence by coming from behind to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1.

Stefan Kiessling put the visitors ahead in the first half, but Frankfurt answered with sustained pressure in the second that led to Stefan Aigner scoring in the 57th.

Martin Lanig powered home a header with eight minutes remaining.

Nuremberg won 1-0 at Hamburger SV, Borussia Moenchengladbach beat Hoffenheim 2-1, and Freiburg drew 1-1 with Mainz.

Bas Dost scored in the last minute to give Wolfsburg a 1-0 win at Stuttgart, in the latest kickoff ever played in the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio saved an 88th minute penalty from Sejad Ibisevic, who somehow missed the rebound two meters (yards) from the unguarded net.

Vieirinha then whipped in a cross for Dost — the topscorer in the Dutch league last season — to give Wolfsburg its first win in Stuttgart for 12 years.

Defending champion Borussia Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 2-1 in the league opener on Friday.

Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri started in place of an unwell Franck Ribery in Fuerth, where Bastian Schweinsteiger stayed on the bench until the 72nd minute with his full fitness still in question.

Committed defending kept Bayern at bay in the first half, and the visitors failed to have a shot on target until Dante's header from Shaqiri's corner was cleared off the line by Heinrich Schmidtgal. Mueller scored from the rebound.

Fuerth pushed hard for an equalizer after the break, but Bayern took advantage of the extra space and Mandzukic was well placed to score with a simple header after Max Gruen saved Robben's effort.

Robben's shot from an acute angle took a deflection past the helpless Gruen and was later attributed as an own-goal from Kleine

In Augsburg, Schahin followed up his stunning strike in the 68th with another 11 minutes later to give Duesseldorf a winning start on its return to the Bundesliga after 15 years.

Moenchengladbach striker Mike Hanke scored the first goal of the afternoon when he met Juan Arango's free kick with a glancing header in the 33rd.

Roberto Firmino equalized with a header from close range in the 66th, but Arango's free kick inside the right post in the 79th sealed the win for Borussia.

“We simply have to play better,” said Moenchengladbach coach Lucien Favre, whose side needs to overturn a two-goal deficit at Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday to progress to the Champions League group stage.

Hamburg was one of the six top tier teams knocked out of the first round of the German Cup, but there was to be no respite as Nuremberg claimed its first win in the northern city for 20 years.

“The mood wasn't good beforehand. Now it's even worse,” Hamburg captain Heiko Westermann said.

Only Rene Adler prevented Nuremberg taking the lead after the interval, when the former Germany No. 1 denied Sebastian Polter after some great work from Japan's Hiroshi Kiyotake on his Bundesliga debut.

The visitors deservedly went ahead in the 68th when Hanno Balitsch blasted home the rebound after Per Nilsson hit the crossbar from a corner.
