New York beats Columbus; Colorado downs Houston

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jamaican forward Dane Richards made a 50-meter run to score in the second-half and give to the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 upset win over the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer on Sunday.

The win was the second straight for the lowly Red Bulls since Richie Williams was made interim head coach after the resignation of Juan Carlos Osorio.

First-place Columbus lost for the first time since June 20, but still holds a one-point lead over Chicago in the Eastern Conference.

Richards scored his third goal of the season off a spectacular run following a Columbus corner attempt in the 63rd minute. He ran 50 meters, eluded midfielder Brian Carroll and fired a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.

In Sunday's other match, French defender Julien Baudet scored his first goal of the year in the 55th minute to give the Colorado Rapids a 1-0 win over Houston Dynamo.

Playing in his first game since breaking his left forearm last month, Baudet was standing in front of an open net when he received a corner from Morocco's Mehdi Ballouchy and buried a header past goalkeeper Pat Onstad.

Houston extended its winless skid to three matches. The Dynamo have a two-point lead over Los Angeles in the Western Conference.
