Corinthians wins third Brazilian Cup title

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil -- Corinthians held Internacional to a 2-2 draw Wednesday to clinch its third Brazilian Cup title 4-2 on aggregate. Corinthians won the first leg 2-0 at Sao Paulo on June 17.

With a strong defense and expertly executed counterattack, Corinthians dominated the first half of the game and seldom allowed the home team to get very near its net.

In the 20th minute, Corinthians defender Andre Santos crossed to striker Jorge Henrique, who broke the deadlock with a header.

Eight minutes later, Andre Santos made it 2-0 after receiving the ball in the area and sending it straight into the right side of Internacional's net.

Santos had a chance in the 30th, but Internacional defender Indio diffused Ronaldo's attempt.

Internacional came back in the second half with a much more offensive game, breaking down Corinthians defense on several occasions.

Midfielder Alecsandro scored twice in four minutes to level. He scored in the 70th minute after outwitting Corinthians goalkeeper Felipe. He scored the equalizer with a header.

The title gives Corinthians the right to play in next year's Copa Libertadores, a tournament it has never won and which it has not contested in three years.

The Brazilian Cup is restricted to teams not involved in the Copa Libertadores in the same year, and the winner of the two-legged final gets entry to the following season's Libertadores.
