Joannie Rochette defends Skate Canada women's title

KITCHENER, Canada -- World silver medalist Joannie Rochette claimed her second straight Skate Canada women's title Saturday and booked her ticket to figure skating's Grand Prix Final in Tokyo in December.

Rochette delivered a competent but certainly not stellar performance set to Samson and Delilah. In fact, there was not one shining star in the 11-woman field.

The five-time Canadian champion finished well ahead of the rest, however, putting a total of 182.90 points on the board. She struggled to hold on to landings of two triple jumps early on and later turned two planned triples to doubles.

US champion Alissa Czisny, who fell twice, was second with 163.53 after nicely landing four triple jumps and showcasing her superior spinning ability. Finland's Laura Lepisto climbed from fourth into the bronze medal position with 158.82 even though she scaled back three planned triples jumps into doubles.

Her choreography and presentation saved her. American Mirai Nagasu, who had been third after the short program, settled for fourth with 156.83.

Japan's Akiko Suzuki, 24, coming off a win at Cup of China three weeks ago, vaulted into fifth spot from the eighth place she held after the short program.
