Novotny, Ricker win at Snowboard World Cup

VALMALENCO, Italy -- Michal Novotny of the Czech Republic won the men's snowboardcross Friday for his first World Cup victory in three years, and Canada's Maelle Ricker won the women's event.

Novotny edged runner-up Nick Baumgartner of the United States and Germany's David Speiser in third to secure his first win since Furana, Japan, in 2006. Novotny moved to 12th in the overall World Cup standings with 3,150 points, but remains well behind leader Markus Schairer of Austria who has 5,450.

In the women's race, Ricker finished ahead of fellow Canadian Dominique Maltais for her 11th career World Cup win, with Zoe Gillings of Britain in third.

Ricker's moved up to fourth in the overall standings with 5,100 points, 1,430 behind leader Doris Guenther of Austria.

The Valmalenco World Cup event continues with the men's and women's halfpipe on Saturday and the men's and women's parallel slalom races on Sunday.
