Kostner wins Euro Figure Skating championships

ZAGREB, Croatia -- Carolina Kostner became the first Italian woman to win two European titles on Saturday after holding off a stern challenge by Sarah Meier of Switzerland. Kostner also made it a double for her coach, Michael Huth, who also trains Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic at their training base in Oberstdorf, Germany. Verner took the men’s title Thursday.

Kostner finished with 111.97 points for the free skate and 171.28 overall. Meier moved up from fourth to come second for consecutive silver medals in the top free program. The Swiss skater had 169.44 points overall and 113.00 for her free.
