Hackett breaks own world mark in short-course 800m

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Australian swimmer Grant Hackett has broken his own short-course 800-meter freestyle world record. Hackett, who will attempt to win his third straight 1,500-meter gold at the Beijing Olympics, set the mark at the Victorian state short-course championships Saturday. He finished in 7 minutes, 23.42 seconds, beating the 7:25.28 he swam in August 2001.

The 28-year-old Hackett will continue his Olympic preparation in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Hackett holds the 800-meter long-course record, and previously held the 1,500-meter world record.
