TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Chinese Taipei Jingmei Girls' High School & National Taiwan Normal University women's Tug of War Team (中華台北景美-師大女子拔河聯隊) yesterday took gold in the 2014 Tug of War International Federation Outdoor World Championships Open in the United States of America.
Of the nine athletes who participated in the winning effort, four are current high school students enrolled at Jingmei. Before leaving Taiwan to participate in the open, team coach Kuo Sheng (郭昇) stated that most of the athletes bore new and old injuries, which, along with jetlag, would make it tough for the members to participate in an outdoor tournament.
However, the team took gold in the 540-kilogram division, logging a non-stop streak of 20 wins during the open.
Though the rules of the open welcome Tug of War clubs from around the globe and does not regulate the exclusive participation of national teams, multiple teams from various countries participated, making the tournament a difficult one for Chinese Taipei. However, the team stated that as the open was difficult in itself, it is also the best warm-up competition before the actual championships.
The open preliminaries are made up of Round Robin matches between all participating clubs. Only the four clubs with the highest scores can enter the second round between the top teams.
During the Round Robins, Chinese Taipei secured 16 straight wins and no losses to enter the second round of competition between the top four teams, starting with the Gaztedi Club from Spain. After a 2:0 win, Chinese Taipei took gold from Switzerland's Gonten Club with another 2:0 win.
The team will continue to participate in the 500 kg division on Aug. 29 (U.S. time), the 540 kg division tournament on Aug. 30, the 500 kg division tournament and the mixed genders 600 kg division tournament on Aug. 31.
