Summer to be a season of international sports

Taiwan will host a series of international sports tournaments during the summer, with a professional tennis invitational already under way in Kaohsiung, education authorities have disclosed.

The OEC Kaohsiung ATP Challenge, which kicked off on July 12, features Taiwan's top tennis player Yen-hsun Lu, who is defending the singles title against many of his local and foreign contestants, according to the Sports Administration (SA) under the Education Ministry.

In Taipei, the Yonex Open will kick off on July 15, featuring top badminton players from around the world, including Olympic gold medalist Lin Dan of China. Prize money totals US$200,000.

On July 16, the 17th Asian Women's U19 Volleyball Championship will begin, with 15 teams from 15 countries competing.

From July 19 to 21, the 2014 UCI Taiwan Hsin-Chu Track International Classic will take place in the northern city of Hsinchu. It is the first time that any Taiwanese city has hosted a UCI cycling track event.

Back in Taipei, an Asian judo tournament will begin on July 25, followed by an Asian figure skating championship on Aug. 6 and an Asian archery championship on Aug. 10.

Also in Taipei, the annual William Jones Cup basketball tournament will kick off on Aug. 9.
