Local tennis player secures Putian Futures singles title

TAIPEI--Huang Liang-chi of Taiwan beat compatriot Yang Tsung-hua 7-5, 6-3 to win the singles title at the men's Putian Futures tennis event in China's Fujian Province on Sunday.

Huang and Yang were the top two seeds in the US$15,000 tournament and entered the final having only lost one set each in their previous four matches.

Yang won the doubles title with another Taiwanese player, Peng Hsien-yin, after the duo defeated Huang and American Nicolas Meister by winning a super tiebreaker 15-13 after splitting the first two sets.

The 22-year-old Huang, currently ranked 328th in the world, will earn 27 valuable ranking points for his singles win, which will likely help catapult him back into the top 300.

Meanwhile, Huang was named on Sunday as a member of the men's tennis team that will represent Taiwan at the 2014 Asian Games, to be held in Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4.

Other members of the team include Taiwan's top male player Lu Yen-hsun, who is currently ranked 48th in the world, Jimmy Wang (142nd), Chen Ti (309th) and doubles specialists Peng and Lee Hsin-han.
