Mizutani defeats Chuang, wins table tennis tourney

TAIPEI -- World No. 9 Chuang Chih-yuan of Taiwan fell just short of the title at an invitational men's table tennis tournament in Kaohsiung yesterday, losing 4-0 to Japanese player Jun Mizutani in the event's title match.

Mizutani won US$40,000 in prize money and Chuang won US$20,000 in the US$105,000 tournament held in the southern city's K-Arena.

The 32-year-old Chuang was edged 4-3 by the Japanese player in a match on Saturday but was unable to muster as much resistance in the final.

Chuang earned a shot at the title by beating Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany 4-1 in the semifinals earlier in the day. Mizutani joined Chuang in the final with a 4-1 win over Sweden's Jorgen Persson.

Ovtcharov is a name familiar to Taiwanese table tennis fans because he edged out Chuang in a tightly fought battle for the bronze medal in men's singles at the 2012 London Olympics.

Eight top international players competed in the event sponsored by Taiwan Styrene Monomer Corporation.
