Standard Chartered says to launch charity marathon

TAIPEi--Standard Chartered Bank is joining the increasingly popular trend of organizing running events in Taiwan, as it plans to sponsor a marathon on the island for the first time next February.

“The '2014 Taipei Standard Chartered Charity Marathon' will offer a brand new race route that will start from the Presidential Office plaza (in Taipei),” said Ajay Kanwal, the bank's president and chief executive officer.

The organizers hope to attract 36,000 local and foreign athletes and running enthusiasts to the event, which will be held Feb. 23, 2014.

“We are delighted to host an inclusive race for marathon runners, families and the visually impaired,” Kanwal said.

Standard Chartered said it will donate a total of NT$15 million (US$506,170) toward helping visually impaired people find job placements and assisting with a worldwide program for preventable blindness.
