Kenyans take top places in Taipei marathon

Kemboi, competing in the annual event for the third time, won the men's 42-kilometer race in a time of 2:20:02.

In the women's division, Mercy Jelimo Too, also of Kenya, took the title after crossing the finish line in 2:42:06.

Among the Taiwanese marathon runners, Wang Sheng-ya had the best time of 2:38:58 in the men's division but was disqualified because he was not registered to compete.

Wang entered the race in place of Taiwanese Tsai Kai-cheng, who was unable to make it, but neither runner had official permission to make the substitution.

Wang said after the race that he regretted his decision to run in Tsai's place.

Both Wang and Tsai were banned for one year from competitions organized by the Chinese Taipei Road Running Association.

In the half marathon race, Taiwanese runner Chou Ting-yin won the men's category, while Mary Colburn of the United States finished first in the women's division.

Two Taiwanese won the 10-km race, with Wu Wen-chien placing first in the men's division and Liao Pei-ling taking the women's category.

A total of 12,274 runners from 20 countries registered for the race, including 5,897 from Taipei.

The marathon took place on the expressway between Hsichih and Wugu in New Taipei.
