Taiwan takes second in 540kg tug-of-war event

BRUSSELS -- Taiwan's team won a silver medal in the women's 540 kilogram category at the 2012 Tug of War International Federation's (TWIF's) World Outdoor Championships Saturday in Appenzell, Switzerland.

Taiwan's team, composed of students mainly from Taipei Jingmei Girls High School, beat South Africa 3-0 in the semifinals before losing to Sweden 3-0 in the final. The result surpassed Taiwan's fourth-place finish in the same category at the 2010 championships, its best record in the event.

In the bronze medal competition, Netherlands defeated South Africa 2-1.

Lin Li-hua, principal of the Jingmei school, said that even though the Taiwanese team members were on average much smaller and younger than other participating teams, they still managed to fight their way into the final competition with their strong willpower and team efforts.
