Frank Schleck narrowly leads in Tour de France

CUNEO, Italy -- Frank Schleck led narrowly over five rivals to start Tuesday’s 16th stage of the Tour de France, which took the peloton into the Alps on a grueling mountain ride.

Schleck is looking to become the first rider from Luxembourg to win the Tour since Charly Gaul in 1958.

He is only seven seconds ahead of Bernhard Kohl of Austria and 0:08 in front of Cadel Evans of Australia.

Denis Menchov of Russia is 0:38 back in fourth place, while American rider Christian Vande Velde is 0:39 behind and Carlos Sastre of Spain trails by 0:49 — making for one of the most wide-open races in Tour history.

The 16th stage took riders on a 157-kilometer (97.6-mile) trek from Cuneo before heading out of Italy and reaching Jausiers in the French Alps.
