Former heptathlon champ Eunice Barber off color

MARSEILLE -- Former French heptathlon and long jump world champ Eunice Barber could only manage a meeting best jump of 6.27 meters in Marseille on Friday, well off the minimum standard needed for a berth in the Beijing Games of 6.78 meters.

Sierra Leone-born Barber only returned from a September knee operation on June 18, when she jumped 6.38 meters in Grenoble. And the 33-year-old insisted she still “really believes” she can make the Games and will now seek better form at upcoming meetings in Reims and Tangiers.
