Sydney to host first leg of 2010 triathlon championships

SYDNEY -- Sydney will host the opening round of next year's world championships after the venue which staged the first Olympic triathlon in 2000 was selected to kick off the worldwide series on April 11.

Seoul (May 8-9), Madrid (June 5-6), Hamburg (July 17-18), London (July 24-25) and Kitzbuehel (Aug. 14-15) will also stage rounds before the grand final in Budapest (Sept. 11-12).

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) is considering adding an eighth event that will be held in May if approved.

“The series will be staged in three Olympic cities as well as some of the most important centers of the world,” ITU president Marisol Casado said in a statement.

“This is a major step forward for our sport.”
