Taekwondo athletes may win four medals

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan’s taekwondo team has a good chance of winning four medals, including at least one gold, in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, a former award-winning taekwondo athlete said yesterday.

Huang Chih-hsiung, a legislator of the ruling Kuomintang who won a bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and a silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics, said that if everything goes as well as hoped for, the Taiwan team, officially called Chinese Taipei, should be able to capture four medals, with at least one of them being gold.

The four Olympic medal hopefuls in the Taiwanese taekwondo team are Chu Mu-yen, Yang Shu-chun, Su Li-wen, and Sung Yu-chi.

Chu, fighting in the men’s under-58kg division, won Taiwan’s second gold medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games at the age of 22. He is under pressure to retain his title in Beijing.

Yang, who is Chu’s girlfriend, was the champion in the women’s under-49kg event in the Asian taekwondo tournament in April. She is hoping for success in the women’s competition in the Beijing Olympics.

Su captured a gold medal in the women’s under-63kg event in the Doha Asian Games in August 2007, while Sung won the gold medal in the men’s under 72kg category in the 2007 Beijing WTF World Taekwondo Championships.

Taekwondo is one of a few sports categories in which Taiwan has a good chance to win medals. In the Athens Olympics in 2004, three of the country’s five medals were won in the taekwondo competition, including two gold medals. The other two medals were won in archery.
