Ancient bells to be featured in the Games medal ceremonies

BEIJING -- Olympic organizers said Tuesday that the sounds of ancient bells are to be used during the medal ceremonies at the Beijing Games.

Tan Dun, who composed the music that will accompany the medal ceremonies, said that he choose bronze bells that were 2,500 years old and belonged to Marquis Yi. He also incorporated the sound of jade stones.

“The music represents very traditional Chinese philosophies of peace, harmony and co-existence,” he said.

The bells were found in 1977 when the tomb of Yi was discovered.

Organizers also said that the music that will accompany athletes into the stadiums will consist of brass music.

Wang Hesheng, who composed the tunes, said that he was normally a brass music composer.

“For marching music, it has to be vibrant. The times are changing, so it has to be distinct as well.”

“It has to be a world language, not just for Chinese athletes, so that it is easy for people from around the world to sing. It combines soft elements and of Chinese folk music,” he said.
