S. Korean Olympic chief quits over feud with gov’t

SEOUL, South Korea -- The head of South Korea’s Olympic Committee resigned Monday over a personnel feud with the government, just four months before the Beijing Olympics, officials said. Chairman Kim Jung-kil had been upset that the government rejected his nomination for secretary-general of the committee, Culture Ministry spokesman Yu Byong-han said.

Kim named Koo Ahn-sook, the former vice president of Kookmin Bank, to the position in February, but the Culture Ministry rejected Kim’s appointment, citing “procedural problems,” Yu said.

Koo was to be the first women named for the job.
