2008 Final Olympic Baseball Qualifying to open March 7

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- The 2008 Final Olympic Baseball Qualifying Tournament will open March 7 for a week long competition in the central city of Taichung, with eight teams competing for three berths in the Beijing Olympics.

A total of 28 round-robin matches will be played at Taichung’s Intercontinental Stadium and at the Douliu township stadium in Yunlin County.

The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association, the organizer of the tournament, said tickets for the 5,000 seats in newly completed outfield stands at Intercontinental Stadium can be booked at 7-Eleven convenience stores around Taiwan.

Taiwan’s 24-member national roster is composed mostly of players from the Chinese Professional Baseball League. The team placed third in the Asian Baseball Championship last December, with Japan winning the right to compete in the Beijing Olympics.

Taiwan and runner-up South Korea, together with six other teams outside Asia, will compete in the final qualifying round for the remaining three Olympic berths.

The United States, Cuba and the Netherlands, together with China, have already qualified.

South Korea, Canada, Australia and Mexico are considered Taiwan’s main rivals in the qualifying series, with the other three teams — Germany, Spain and South Africa — seen as having little chance of securing a top-three finish.
