Ovechkin scores in return to leads Caps to victory

Ovechkin's one-timer past Henrik Lundqvist at 15:06 in the first period tied the game at 1-1 and was his NHL-leading 15th goal of the season. New York Rangers right wing Marian Gaborik has also scored 15 goals.

“It's always nice when you get hurt and you come back and you score in the first period on your first shot,” Ovechkin, who had not played since sustaining the injury on Nov. 1, told reporters. “You feel pretty good about yourself.

“After that I feel pretty cool. I was not afraid to take some hits and go battle.”

The Capitals (13-4-4) moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with the victory.
