Ovechkin scores twice as Capitals beat Thrashers

ATLANTA -- Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 12th and 13th goals as the Washington Capitals held on to hand the Atlanta Thrashers their fourth straight loss, 4-3 on Thursday. Ovechkin didn't get a chance to go against fellow Russian Ilya Kovalchuk. Atlanta's star sat out his first game since breaking his right foot last weekend. The Capitals built a 3-0 lead and survived a wild finish. Three goals were scored in the last 2:23, including Zach Bogosian's second of the game for Atlanta just before the buzzer. Semyon Varlamov stopped Jim Slater on a penalty shot in the first period and bailed out the Capitals when Atlanta dominated the final two periods.

Oilers 6, Red Wings 5, SO At Edmonton, Alberta, Patrick O'Sullivan beat Jimmy Howard with a wrist shot in the third round of a shootout, and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped Henrik Zetterberg on Detroit's final attempt to give Edmonton the victory.

The Red Wings overcame a 5-1 deficit to force overtime.

Ales Hemsky had two goals and an assist for Edmonton. Linemate Dustin Penner had a goal — his ninth of the season — and three assists, and Shawn Horcoff had a goal and two assists. Jean-Francois Jacques also scored.

Lightning 5, Senators 2 At Tampa, Florida, Steven Stamkos had two power-play goals and an assist, and Todd Fedoruk, Ryan Malone and Alex Tanguay also scored for Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis played in his 700th NHL game and extended his team-record season-opening points streak to 10 games (11 assists, 14 points) with an assist. Jarkko Ruutu and Alex Kovalev scored for Ottawa.

Devils 2, Bruins 1 At Boston, Dainius Zubrus scored with 1:26 left, and Yann Danis made 31 saves in his first appearance of the season to lead New Jersey to its sixth straight road win.

David Clarkson opened the scoring for the Devils in the first period, and Patrice Bergeron tied it for Boston in the second.

Coyotes 2, Blues 0 At St. Louis, Ilya Bryzgalov made 32 saves for his NHL-leading third shutout of the season, and Daniel Winnik and Taylor Pyatt scored for Phoenix. Vernon Fiddler assisted on both goals. Bryzgalov led Phoenix to its sixth win in eight games and its best 12-game start since 2000.

Canucks 2, Kings 1, SO At Los Angeles, Mikael Samuelsson scored in the first period and again in the third round of the shootout to lead Vancouver past Los Angeles. Andrew Raycroft made 30 saves in his first start of the season for the Canucks. Scott Parse scored his first NHL goal in the first period for Los Angeles.

Predators 2, Blackhawks 0 At Nashville, Tennessee, Pekka Rinne made 22 saves for his first shutout of the season and fifth overall, and Joel Ward had a power-play goal for Nashville against Chicago.

Jerred Smithson added a short-handed empty-net goal with 3 seconds left.
