Tseng hoping for wind in local event

TAIPEI--Taiwan's Yani Tseng said yesterday she is hoping for strong wind this week to give her an edge as she seeks to defend her title at the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship.

"The stronger the wind is on the course, the more of an advantage I'll have," said the world No. 1 at a news conference in Taipei to welcome LPGA star players who will compete in the tournament.

Tseng played a practice round on the course earlier Tuesday and found it windy, "but overall, I feel it's good," she said.

The 23-year-old, who emerged from a prolonged slump last week with a third-place finish at the LPGA Hana Bank Championship in South Korea, said she is used to playing at the Sunrise Golf & Country Club, having trained there regularly for five to six years as a teenager.

The LPGA Tour made its Taiwan debut on the hilly course last year, and many players had trouble coping with the heavy winds that reared up occasionally during the four-round event.

Sandra Gal of Germany agreed at the news conference that dealing with the wind would be one of the key factors in performing well at the event, which Tseng won last year by five shots over Amy Yang of South Korea and Azahara Munoz of Spain in front of a massive crowd.

Tseng came into last year's LPGA Taiwan Championship as the overwhelming favorite, having captured six titles and 12 top 10 finishes in 19 LPGA events in 2011 prior to her home tournament.

Even with her familiarity with the course, this year is a different story.

Tseng failed to finish in the top 10 in 11 straight LPGA tournaments before her third-place finish last week, and her lack of consistency has many local fans wondering if she will be in contention on Sunday.

The US$2 million tournament will take place at the Sunrise Golf & Country Club in Yangmei Township, Taoyuan County from Oct. 25 to 28.
