Tseng grateful for fans' support as exhibition tees off

TAIPEI--The world's top female golfer, Yani Tseng, said yesterday at a press conference in Taipei that she was excited to return to her home country to launch an exhibition that tells her story of becoming the world No. 1.

Tseng's agent, which organized the exhibition, played a series of videos at the press conference that highlighted tournaments in which she has participated, as well as featuring clips of her training routines.

The exhibition, titled “Yani's Smile and Courage Exhibition,” which features Tseng's diary, personal golf equipment and trophies she has won, runs from Oct. 22 to Nov. 4 in Taipei.

“I didn't know about the exhibition until one or two weeks ago,” said Tseng, who had returned to Taiwan just a day earlier. “I was wondering why they had started putting my things together,” she said.

“I hope this exhibition can show the public my journey (as a golfer) and hope it will inspire everyone to dare to dream big,” said the 23-year-old.

Tseng Li-cheng, a 2012 London Olympics bronze medalist in taekwondo, also attended the press conference and said she felt touched by the videos. She added that the hardships and tears encountered by athletes are rarely seen by the outside world.

Yani Tseng's agent also announced the establishment of her international fan club that day.

Her recent performance, in which she finished third in the LPGA HanaBank Championship in South Korea, was her best over the past few months. She finished outside the top 10 in her 11 LPGA tournaments before the South Korea event and missed the cut three times.

She said she hopes to defend her title at the US$2 million Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship that will be held Oct. 25-28 in Taoyuan County and will bring together eight of the top 10 players on the money list in the field.

In 2011, Yani Tseng carded 16 under 272, taking a five stroke lead over Spaniard Azahara Munoz and Korean Amy Yang, to win the title of Taiwan's first-ever LPGA-sanctioned tournament on her home turf.
