Tseng's fight to regain form might be ending with No. 3 in S. Korea

TAIPEI--World No. 1 female golfer Yani Tseng displayed her best form in over five months, after she finished third at the LPGA HanaBank Championship in South Korea on Sunday.

The defending champion from Taiwan carded a three-round-total of 10-under-par 206, and was only one stroke behind Suzann Pettersen of Norway and Scottish veteran Catriona Matthew.

Matthew rallied with the day's best 5-under 67 and rose from the sixth spot to tie with the Norwegian. But Pettersen emerged as the winner after birdying at the third hole in the playoff.

"I played pretty well today. It was a pity I failed to win by missing out on just one stroke," Tseng later told CNA, adding that she had felt quite confident on the course.

"On a couple of holes, I made different choices for my second shots than what my caddy had suggested. I simply didn't make the right choices, but I think that's part of the learning process and an experience," she said.

Even though Tseng failed to defend her title, she finished in the top three for the first time following a long period of slumping performance after June. Coming into the final round and tied for the third position, the 23-year-old Tseng fired off five birdies and two bogeys to secure her position.

Tseng had finished outside the top 10 rankings during the last 11 LPGA tournaments this year, missing the cut three times, after commencing the year by winning three of LPGA's first five events.

The top-ranked Tseng is scheduled to return to her hometown this week and will try to defend her title at the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship slated to take place from Oct. 25 to 28.
