Ryder Cup star Rose to play in Australian Open

SYDNEY -- Ryder Cup star and world number five Justin Rose will make his debut appearance at the Australian Open in Sydney in December, organizers said on Friday.

Rose, 32, a four-time PGA Tour winner, played a key role in Europe's thrilling 14 1/2 to 13 1/2 Ryder Cup victory over the United States in Chicago over the weekend.

The Englishman will join eight-time Major winner Tom Watson, world number six Adam Scott, defending champion Greg Chalmers and former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy in the Australian Open field.

"This will be my Australian Open debut and the tournament has a history of wonderful champions and I hope I can add my name to that list in December," Rose said in a statement.

He comes into the tournament at The Lakes on Dec. 6-9 on the back of a runner-up finish at the Tour Championship as well as winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March.

Rose has won in Australia before, taking the Australian Masters in 2006 at Melbourne's Huntingdale course.
