NBA's Lin wins hearts of Taiwanese fansLin, who helped lead the Knicks to their fifth straight win in hotly contested National Basketball Association (NBA) games, was born in the U.S. by Taiwanese parents. This connection with Taiwan threw Lin into the spotlight, attracting attention from sports fans in Taiwan and Taiwanese immigrants and students presently living and studying in the U.S. Lin has now become a new hero for basketball fans in New York City. Students from Taiwan have traveled several hours to basketball courts in different American cities to root for the Harvard-educated Lin. Some of them even spread the national flag of the Republic of China at the court to show support for Lin. They said that they are proud of the outstanding performance of a new NBA star with family roots in Taiwan, although Lin is an American citizen. They said Lin recognizes their strong support because he acknowledges the R.O.C. flag. Lin, known as Lin Shu-how by his Chinese name, has visited Taiwan in the past to take part in charity events and help share his basketball techniques and experiences, including giving temporary coaching to young basketball players on the island. Lin has many relatives living in Taiwan. On one past visit to Taiwan, he came along with former NBA star Yao Ming, born in China, for charity events. For Taiwanese people living in Taiwan and abroad, Lin has become another pride of Taiwan, similar to U.S. Major League Baseball star Wang Chien-ming and Ladies Professional Golf Association star Yani Tseng. Wang, who grew up in southern Taiwan, is presently a starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals baseball team. Tseng, who was also born on the island of just 23 million people, has set several LPGA records in her young and brilliant pro-golf career. | ||||||||||||||||||||
