Serbia beats Argentina in worlds; China advancesChina, Puerto Rico and Ivory Coast all finished with 1-4 records in Group C in Ankara, but China advanced on points differential. Charles Abouo scored 19 points to lead Ivory Coast, Mohamed Kone had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds and Mamadou Lamizana added 17 points. Jose Barea scored 19 points for Puerto Rico and David Huertas had 18. Kone said Ivory Coast needed to win by 12 points to advance. In that group Russia beat Greece 73-69 to finish second. Timofey Mozgov scored 18 points for Russia. Andrey Vorontsevich's one-handed dunk with four seconds to go in the third quarter increased Russia's lead to 16 points and his team was never behind. The score was tied 30-30 at halftime. Sofoklis Schortsanitis scored 16 points for Greece (3-2) after missing the first two matches due to suspension. Russia led by as many as 20 points and had a 13-0 scoring run. Greece coach Jonas Kazlauskas agreed that his team had problems dealing with the pick and roll defense. In Group D, defending champion Spain defeated Canada 89-67 to finish second behind Lithuania, thanks to New Zealand's 82-70 victory over France, which now has to play Turkey. Lithuania defeated Lebanon 84-66. New Zealand finished third and France fourth. The undefeated United States confirmed first place in Group B by crushing Tunisia 95-57. In the only meaningful match in that group in Istanbul, Brazil beat Croatia 92-74 after 18 points from Marcelo Machedo and finished third behind Slovenia, a 65-60 winner over Iran. Croatia's fourth place means it now faces bitter rival Serbia in the round of 16 on Saturday. Also Saturday, Spain plays Greece. On Sunday, Slovenia plays Australia and Turkey faces France. On Monday, the U.S. plays Angola and Russia takes on New Zealand. The single-elimination round in Istanbul concludes Tuesday, when Lithuania plays China and Brazil meets Argentina. | |||||||||||||
