Updated Friday, July 24, 2009 10:50 am TWN, By Lin Xinyi and Christopher Ong, The Straits Times/Asia News Network Kobe Bryant touches young lives during 2009 Asia tourDuring a coaching clinic for 20 youths, Bryant picked Russel to perform a lung-busting 17 sprints-a-minute workout, twice. But any strain he felt after completing the task was eased with a hug from the LA Lakers shooting guard. “That is one of my least favorite drills. But it was all worthwhile,” beamed the 16-year-old. Russel, who competed in the Asian Youth Games, also went home with a Bryant-autographed basketball. It will sit proudly on his shelf, to remind him of one of the most memorable days of his life — the day he shared center court with Bryant in front of an 8,500-strong crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Inspiring youths and touching hearts was exactly what Bryant did on Wednesday. From the moment he arrived at 10:51 a.m. at Changi Airport, he made an impression with his personable nature. Close to 50 students experienced that first-hand during a question-and-answer session at the Ritz-Carlton, Millenia. They were also able to take away pointers to help them in their respective sports. Fans too had the chance to get a glimpse of Bryant during his trip to the Nike flagship store. Close to 400 fans outside Wisma Atria were on hand to greet him. However, only 50 fans who purchased a limited edition shirt were allowed to spend some time with the star in the store. But the supporters holding placards, posters and drawings of their hero outside did not go unnoticed. Bryant often gave his fans the thumbs-up and waved to various sections of the screaming crowd. Following his one-day stop in the Republic, he will be heading to Taipei — the third of six cities on his Asian Tour. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
