Last-minute scuffle mars Sparks’ 84-81 victory over Shock in WNBA

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan -- Candace Parker scored 21 points and DeLisha Milton-Jones added 19 before both were ejected after a scuffle in the final minute as the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Detroit Shock 84-81 in the WNBA on Tuesday.

The game turned ugly in the final seconds as a collision between Parker and Detroit’s Plenette Pierson turned into a shoving match that saw players and coaches from both teams leave the bench.

Shock assistant coach Rick Mahorn, who was involved in the NBA’s Pistons-Pacers brawl in November 2004 as a Detroit broadcaster trying to break up the fight, appeared to shove Lisa Leslie to the floor at one point.

Parker, Milton-Jones, Pierson and Mahorn were all ejected, while Detroit’s Cheryl Ford left the floor on a wheelchair after getting injured while trying to restrain Pierson.

Detroit rallied from 21 down but missed a chance to win the game in the final 2 minutes.

Leslie finished with 10 points for Los Angeles, which swept the two-game season series.

Storm 76, Lynx 73 At Minneapolis, Sue Bird scored 22 points, Swin Cash added 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Seattle locked down two of the league’s top scorers while holding on to beat Minnesota.

Seimone Augustus and Candice Wiggins helped the Lynx surge back from a 17-point deficit midway through the third quarter, but their early struggles were ultimately too much to overcome.

Augustus shot 3-for-16 from the floor and finished with 10 points. Wiggins went 3-for-11 and had 14 points — including eight free throws. Her closely guarded, off-balance 3-pointer from the top of the key hit the back of the rim and bounced back right before the buzzer, giving Minnesota its 11th loss in the last 16 games.

Monarchs 79, Dream 66 At Atlanta, Scholanda Robinson scored a career-high 17 points to lift Sacramento to a fifth straight victory.

Rookie Laura Harper had a career-high 12 rebounds for the Monarchs.

Atlanta, losers of three straight, dropped to a league-worst 3-22. Ivory Latta and Kasha Terry each scored 15 points for the Dream.

Comets 94, Mercury 92 At Houston, Tina Thompson had 19 points and seven rebounds as Houston rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to beat Phoenix for the first time in seven games since July 2006.

Michelle Snow added 16 points and six rebounds for the Comets. Rookie reserve Matee Ajavon finished with 12 points. Diana Taurasi finished with a game-high 31 points, including 14-for-15 from the free-throw line, for Phoenix.

Sky 68, Fever 60 At Chicago, Candice Dupree had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Chicago past Indiana.

Jia Perkins had 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Chicago. Sylvia Fowles, the second overall pick of this year’s WNBA draft, returned to the Sky after missing 17 games with a sprained left knee. She came off the bench and finished with five rebounds and a block in 12 minutes.

Tammy Sutton-Brown had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Katie Douglas scored 14 and Allison Feaster added 11 for the Fever.
