Yankees shut down Tanaka over sore arm

NEW YORK--Masahiro Tanaka is out indefinitely after suffering soreness in his right arm following a simulated game exercise, the New York Yankees announced Friday.

The 25-year-old Japanese right-hander who signed a seven-year Major League Baseball contract worth US$155 million with the Yankees in January, was placed on the disabled list last month due to a torn right elbow ligament.

The Yankees described this latest development as a minor setback. They opted not to have Tanaka undergo tendon replacement surgery, hoping to work his elbow in shape for a return in September as the team might contend for a playoff spot.

Tanaka tossed 49 pitches Thursday in Detroit and was to have another simulated game experience on Tuesday, although that might change after being shut down Friday.

"I want to be a little bit cautious," Tanaka said. "I haven't been throwing for a number of weeks."

Tanaka was set to continue his rehabilitation with exercises at Yankee Stadium.

"We still have a whole month," Tanaka said. "I'm going to do my best to get back."

With just over four weeks remaining in the six-month regular season, the Yankees were 69-63, seven games behind Baltimore in second place in the American League East division and three games behind Seattle and Detroit for the final AL wildcard playoff berth.
