Price tosses one-hitter at ex-club but loses

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- Detroit pitcher David Price tossed a one-hitter at his former Tampa Bay teammates Thursday but lost as the Rays edged the visiting Tigers 1-0.

Five days shy of his 29th birthday, the American left-hander faced his former Major League Baseball club for the first time and took the loss thanks to the only hit he surrendered.

A throwing error by Detroit shortstop Eugenio Suarez allowed Ben Zobrist to reach first base with one out in the first inning and Brandon Guyer followed with a triple to centerfield to produce the game's only run.

Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb and relievers Brad Boxberger and Jake McGee combined on a four-hit shutout to snap a four-game losing skid for the Rays.

Price, who fell to 12-9, struck out nine batters over nine innings but took the loss against the only major league team he had ever known until being traded last week to the title-contending Tigers.

Price is eligible for contract arbitration after the season and the Rays are eight games behind Detroit for the last American League playoff berth, sparking Tampa Bay's move to trade away the star hurler in a three-team deal last month that also included Seattle and saw the Rays land starting pitcher Drew Smyly plus two other players.

Price was the first overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft and went 82-47 in 175 appearances for the Rays, compiling a 3.18 earned-run average and winning the Cy Young award in 2012 as the league's top pitcher.

Price was 11-8 this season with a 3.11 earned-run average before the trade. In his first start in Detroit for the Tigers, Price earned a victory over Seattle last weekend, striking out seven batters and allowing only three hits over eight innings.
