Kershaw pitches Dodgers to win over Padres

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles pitcher Clayton Kershaw moved into a tie for the most wins in the majors this season, notching victory number 15 as he led the Dodgers to a 2-1 win over San Diego on Thursday, maintaining the team's 3-1/2 game lead atop the National League West.

The Dodgers' crosstown rivals, the Los Angeles Angels, opened a two-game lead in the American League West by beating Boston, while Detroit slipped 1-1/2 games off the AL Central summit by losing at Tampa Bay.

Kershaw (15-3) allowed one run in eight innings and produced ten strikeouts to tie with Johnny Cueto, Wily Peralta and Adam Wainwright on 15 wins.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner retired 12 in a row before giving up his first hit with two outs in the sixth.

Justin Turner's two-run homer was enough to secure the victory.

The Angels won 2-0 at Boston to complete a four-game sweep of the Red Sox.

Matt Shoemaker (12-4) pitched 7-2/3 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts for Los Angeles, which moved two games clear of idle Oakland, with those two teams to play a vital series at Oakland over the weekend.

Boston had only one hit for the game and fell to its fifth-straight loss.

Detroit's David Price gave up only one hit in his first start against his former team, but that first-inning RBI triple by Brandon Guyer was enough for Tampa Bay to edge the Tigers 1-0.

Price (12-9), traded to the Tigers on July 31, got a standing ovation while taking his warmup throws before the bottom of the first and threw a complete game.

Rays' starter Alex Cobb (9-6) struck out six over seven scoreless innings to improve to 7-0 in his past 10 starts.

Atlanta's Justin Upton extended his hitting streak to 12 games as the Braves extended their offensive resurgence in an 8-0 win at Cincinnati.

Atlanta put it away early, sending 11 batters to the plate in the third inning for five runs. Jason Heyward got it started with a single and drew a bases-loaded walk that finished the rally. Upton singled home a pair of runs during the inning and later added a sacrifice fly.

The Braves have won six of their past seven games, scoring at least seven runs four times. They remain seven games behind Washington in the NL East.

The Nationals maintained that gap by beating Arizona 1-0, with Denard Span scoring from second base due to a throwing error by Diamondbacks' third baseman Jordan Pacheco in the ninth inning.

Washington's winning streak reached 10 games, tied for the franchise record. Five of the past six wins have come at the final at-bat.

The Nationals swept three-game series against the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates before winning all four games of this series.

San Francisco's Buster Posey went 4 for 4 at the plate to power the Giants to a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs, just after the Cubs took a 2-1 win when the teams played out the final four innings of a rain-interrupted game.

Minnesota's Kennys Vargas homered and sparked rallies with two other hits, leading the Twins past Cleveland 4-1.

New York's Brandon McCarthy pitched a shutout to steer the Yankees to a 3-0 win over Houston, avoiding a three-game sweep.
