Taiwan defeats host to achieve first win in Pony Bronco World Series

LOS ANGELES--A Taiwanese team of 11- and 12-year-old baseball players defeated their American hosts 4-1 Friday to reach their first victory at the 2014 Bronco World Series.

Representing the Asia-Pacific region at the Aug. 1-4 tournament in Los Alamitos, California, Taiwan slid to victory with hundreds of overseas Chinese cheering from the stands.

But even with the decisive victory, team manager Lin Shih-chin said he was not satisfied with the players' performances, particularly what he called weak batting.

The local opponents, Los Alamitos, made several mistakes which allowed Taiwan to take the lead, Lin said.

Taiwan will face a team from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico on Saturday in the second round, after the Puerto Rican team beat competitors from Mexico 8-0.

The Bronco World Series brings together top 11 to 12-year-old teams from across the world, including champions from Asia, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States.

International teams qualifying for the tournament have to win a series of local, regional and national qualifying tournaments.
