Locals earn berth in Pony League baseball worlds

MANILA--Taiwan defeated strong rival South Korea 3-0 in a Pony Division contest (for 13-14 year-olds) in an Asia-Pacific Pony baseball tournament final in Manila Saturday.

The win qualifies Taiwan to represent the Asia-Pacific region in the Pony League World Series scheduled to take place in August in Pennsylvania in the United States.

Another Taiwanese team defeated a team from host South Korea 11-8 to win the 2014 Pony International Asia-Pacific Bronco Division (11-12 years old) Championship on Friday.

The win qualified Taiwan to represent the Asia-Pacific region at the Pony Bronco World Series scheduled for August in California.

A total of seven teams took part in the tournament — Taiwan, which fielded a team consisting of 11-12 year olds from three elementary schools in New Taipei, South Korea (two teams), Japan, Russia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
