ANGELES, Philippines -- A team of Taiwanese baseball players earned the right to represent the Asia-Pacific region at the Junior League World Series this year after beating Hong Kong 7-0 Saturday in the qualification tournament.
The team of students from Chung-Shan Junior High School in Taichung managed to route the Hong Kong team, which included many players from Japan and South Korea, during the game in the Philippine city of Angeles.
Taiwan made the game's first two runs in the first half of the third inning and continued to rack up runs as Hong Kong struggled to get a player on first base — which did not happen until the seventh inning.
The win in the tournament, being held June 30-July 6 in the Clark Freeport Zone, means Taiwan will march ahead to the Junior League World Series Aug. 9-16 in Taylor, Michigan in the United States.
