Washington Nationals beat Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 in clash of leaders

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin -- Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez and his relievers held Milwaukee's potent batting lineup to no runs and just three hits as the Nationals beat the Brewers 3-0 on Monday in a clash of National League divisional leaders.

The other NL divisional leader San Francisco was also held scoreless at home by San Diego but maintained its four-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers who lost at Kansas City, while the main matchup in the American League saw Toronto inflict a third-straight defeat on the New York Yankees.

Washington's win at Milwaukee was a defensive struggle, with only one run-scoring hit all game: Adam LaRoche's three-run homer in the third inning.

Gonzalez (4-4) struck out five in six innings in what was his second start since a month out with shoulder inflammation.

Tyler Clippard struck out the side in the ninth for his first save of the season.

Kansas City ended a run of four-straight losses with a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers.

Jeremy Guthrie (5-6) allowed two runs pitching into the eighth inning and won his third-straight start. He was buoyed by an offense that had only scored eight runs total during its recent slide.

Jarrod Dyson, the Royals' No. 9 hitter, went 3 for 3, driving in two runs, and stole two bases as Kansas City's slumbering bats awoke against former Royals ace Zack Greinke, who gave up a season worst five runs and was replaced in the sixth.

Toronto's Adam Lind hit a three-run home run in his return to the starting lineup as the Blue Jays beat the Yankees 8-3.

Lind drove in four runs and Dioner Navarro had two RBIs for Toronto, who scored as many runs in this game as they managed over three losing games at Yankee Stadium last week.
