Detwiler joins US rotation for World Classic

Washington pitching rotation partner Gio Gonzalez was already set for the Americans' lineup, although he will not pitch until the second round of the event, and Washington's Roger Bernadina is an outfielder for the Dutch team.

The tournament, won by Japan in its first two editions, begins March 2 in Asia and concludes March 19 in San Francisco.

Detwiler went 10-8 last year for the Nationals with a 3.40 earned-run average, making 27 starts for the National League East division champions.

Gonzalez will likely not play for the U.S. squad until the second round, provided the hosts get that far. He would probably pitch on March 12 at Miami in what would be the Americans' first second-round game.

Detwiler is likely to pitch on March 9 against Italy in a first-round game at Phoenix, Arizona. He is looking forward to having Gonzalez alongside him on the U.S. squad.

“We will be in untested waters,” he said. “Having somebody there that I was with all year last year is going to calm me down a little bit. It's going to make it seem like a regular start.”
