Cards' ace Carpenter likely out for season with nerve injury

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday he doesn't expect Carpenter to pitch for the team in the coming season, calling it “very unlikely” as the 37-year-old continues to experience discomfort from last year's medical issues.

Carpenter had surgery last July for a nerve problem that caused numbness and weakness in his throwing arm, which started during spring training of 2012.

He had tried to come back in June before opting for surgery. He did return to pitch three regular-season games and make three playoff starts.

However, the right-hander has since told Cardinals management that he had experienced a setback as he prepared for spring training.

“At some point, he'll start reflecting on the next chapter of his life,” Mozeliak said Tuesday, but added Carpenter hadn't yet made a firm decision as to retirement.

A three-time All-Star, Carpenter won the Cy Young as outstanding pitcher in 2005. He missing significant stretches of the 2007 and 2008 seasons due to ongoing elbow problems, then returned in 2009 to finish 17-4 with a career-best 2.24 ERA and claim the Comeback Player of the Year award.

He was also a major contributor in helping St. Louis to World Series titles in 2006 and 2011.
