A-Rod may miss all of '13 season: Yankees

Cashman told radio station WFAN that he is confident that Rodriguez, 37, will meet his projected six-month timetable for returning to the Yankees' lineup but admitted a worst-case scenario was possible as well.

“I think because (of) the serious nature of the surgery and the condition that he's trying to recover from, there is that chance,” Cashman said of Rodriguez missing the full season.

“Best case scenario, yeah, he should be back. Worst case scenario he won't be back, or there might be something in between.”

Rodriguez, a three-time American League Most Valuable Player, underwent an arthroscopic procedure last week.

The Yankees said “A-Rod” would likely be sidelined until the All-Star Game in mid-July, but Cashman warned that Rodriguez's just-underway rehabilitation would likely dictate when he could return.

Rodriguez will “do everything in his power to put himself in the position to get back and be healthy and productive,” Cashman said.

Rodriguez batted .272 with 18 home runs and 57 runs batted in over 122 games last season. The Yankees signed a one-year deal last month with Kevin Youkilis, a one-time standout for archrival Boston, to handle third-base duties until Rodriguez is healthy enough to return.
