Taoyuan team wins 1st game in Little League World Series

The Kuei-Shan Little League team, representing the Asia-Pacific region at the annual tournament, will next face Tokyo Kitasuna Little League from Japan in the double elimination tournament on Aug. 19.

Kuei-shan is one of eight teams vying to win the international division at the tournament and advance to the championship game against the United States champion on Aug. 26.

Chiang Li-wei opened the assault Thursday with a three-run homer in the top of the second inning, and the Taiwanese team added six more in the third with the help of a two-run single by catcher Chen Feng and an RBI double by Chiang to put the game out of reach.

The Taiwanese Little Leaguers also got some help in the third from opposing pitcher Justin Wilson, who walked three and threw two wild pitches.

Taiwan's pitchers were also sharp, with Lin Chun-en and Li Cheng-feng combining to hold the European representatives to one run on one hit over four innings while striking out eight.

The game was ended early after four innings instead of the regulation six because the Taiwanese team was ahead by 10 runs.

Members from Taiwan's representative office in New York and Taiwanese expats from Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and New Jersey attended the game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania to cheer on the young players.

Teams from Taiwan have won 17 Little League World Series titles, but the last one came in 1996.
