Chen was cited by Stan McNeal of Sporting News.com as he looked at the performance of first-year players from abroad in the first half of the major league season.
In the best import category, McNeal said Yu Darvish, a Japanese pitcher with the Texas Rangers, had lived up to expectations, but no one knew what to expect from the 26-year-old Chen, who is entering the All-Star break with a 7-5 record and a 3.93 ERA.
“When you consider the three-year, US$11.888 million deal is about US$95 million less than the Rangers have invested in Darvish, it's safe to say that Chen has been the wiser investment so far,” he wrote.
