Wang not likely to stay with N.Y. Yankees

It appears New York Yankees baseball team will not retain Wang Chien-ming for another year, according to a report from the New York leading squad's official Web site.

Wang is likely to go into the open market for any interested ball club as a free agent, but will not rule out the possibility to be re-signed by the Yankees with a lesser contract.

The two-time 19-game winner is the only player out of the Yankees' four non-tender candidates — outfielder Melky Cabrera, pitchers Chad Gauadin and Sergio Mitre — not mentioned by the team's general manager Brian Cashman as part of the club's candidates on the lookout toward Spring Training.

Wang injured his right foot in June 2008 and has never fully recovered.

His agent, Alan Nero, however, said that Wang has been in his best shape since his throwing programs started on Dec.1 and will be ready to pitch in Major League games by May 1.

The sinker-baller finished the year by winning 1 and losing 6 games out of his 12 games (nine starts).

Given Wang's uncertain outlook, his chance of staying with the Yankees appears to be rather slim.

I feel sad about Wang's departure. He's given us much in the past, and I like the unflappable poise that he has displayed. Unless it's a permanent injury, I see him coming back as an excellent 4th or 5th starter. I'd like to see him resigned to a lesser contract (lesser than the required 80% and 1 year) and let him fully recover.

Strike 1: Foot injury, Strike 2: Shoulder injury, Strike 3: Out of Yankees. Well, good luck to Wang for his venture in the next team.
