Updated Thursday, July 2, 2009 11:11 am TWN, AP Markakis' double caps Orioles comebackBaltimore trailed 10-1 before scoring five runs in the seventh — three on a homer by pinch-hitter Oscar Salazar — and five in the eighth. Boston had defeated the Orioles eight straight times, including five this season. The biggest previous comeback in Orioles history was Sept. 2, 1956, when they rallied from an eight-run deficit at Boston. Mark Hendrickson gave up one run in three innings and George Sherrill got three outs for his 17th save. Takashi Saito took the loss and Papelbon was charged with his second blown save, one night after he tied Bob Stanley's career record for saves with Boston. John Smoltz, making his second start for Boston, took a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth. But a fierce storm forced the game to be stopped for 71 minutes. He allowed one run and three hits. Rangers 9, Angels 5 At Arlington, Marlon Byrd homered twice to drive in five runs and Texas again had its way at home against Joe Saunders. The Angels had their six-game winning streak snapped, but are still 1{ games ahead of Texas. Ian Kinsler, Nelson Cruz and David Murphy also went deep for Texas, which ended what had been one of the worst offensive months in team history with a season-high five home runs — four in 3 2-3 innings off Saunders. Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus had four stolen bases, the first AL rookie to do that since 2000. Twins 2, Royals 1 At Kansas City, Justin Morneau homered for the third straight game and Scott Baker labored through five tough innings to lift Minnesota. Baker fought through a high pitch count to keep Minnesota in a tight game early and the Twins took advantage of another defensive miscue by the Royals for the go-ahead run in the sixth. Morneau provided what little offense the Twins could muster against Brian Bannister, splashing a solo homer into the fountains in right-center in the fourth inning. |
