Mets rebound from loss to beat the Phillies

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets rebounded from a demoralizing defeat to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on Wednesday and take a share of the National League East division lead.

A day after giving up a three-run lead in the ninth inning to lose to their fellow NL East leader, New York — with closing pitcher Billy Wagner back from injury — managed to hold on for victory.

Jose Reyes’ three-run homer snapped a sixth-inning tie to put the Mets ahead to stay.

Cubs 10, Diamondbacks 6 In Phoenix, Chicago stopped a slide and retained top spot in the NL Central with a win over Arizona.

The Cubs had lost five of six heading into the game as its lead in the division was sliced to one game, and they retained that thin advantage.

Reed Johnson had three hits, including a grand slam in the eighth, for Chicago. The grand slam keyed a six-run eighth for a team that had scored just two runs in its previous two games.

Brewers 3, Cardinals 0 In St. Louis, Milwaukee notched its seventh straight win by beating St. Louis, keeping the Brewers on Chicago’s heels in the NL Central.

Milwaukee starter C.C. Sabathia threw a three-hitter while striking out seven in his third straight complete game for his new team.

The Brewers have homered in 19 straight games, tying the franchise record set in 1996, and have 30 home runs in that stretch.

Braves 9, Marlins 4 In Miami, Atlanta’s win over Florida came at a cost, losing slugger Chipper Jones and pitcher Tim Hudson to injury.

Jones, the major league’s batting leader at .369, hurt a hamstring in the fourth inning and immediately left the game.

Hudson departed with soreness in his pitching arm after throwing six shutout innings.

The team said both players will be evaluated further.

Rockies 5, Dodgers 3 In Denver, Matt Holliday drove in two runs, including one on a double that bounced off the pitcher’s glove, as Colorado beat Los Angeles.

Jeff Baker scored twice for Colorado, which finished a seven-game home stand with a 6-1 record that kept them on the fringes of playoff contention.

Reds 9, Padres 5 In Cincinatti, Adam Dunn hit Cincinnati’s first grand slam of the season to key the Reds’ win over San Diego.

Defeat left San Diego pitcher Greg Maddux in the longest winless streak of his career. The 42-year-old Maddux hasn’t won since May, going 14 starts without a victory. He left the game with a 3-2 lead in the sixth before the Reds rallied.

Cincinatti pitcher Bronson Arroyo won his fifth consecutive start — the most by a Reds pitcher since 2000.

Giants 6, Nationals 4 In San Francisco, Rich Aurilia lined a two-run double in the eighth inning to lift San Francisco over Washington.

The Giants won consecutive home games for the first time since June 1-2.

Pirates 8, Astros 7 In Houston, Pittsburgh edged Houston to bring up its first three-game winning streak since May.

Jason Bay hit a two-run homer to give the Pirates their first road sweep of the season.
