SF Giants president Magowan to stand down

SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco Giants president Peter Magowan will retire at the end of this season, the team announced on Friday, marking the end of a 16-year spell in charge of the franchise. During his time in charge the Giants moved to a new stadium and signed Barry Bonds, who became the all-time home-runs record holder though has also been implicated in a steroids scandal.

William Neukom, currently a general partner in the Giants' ownership group, will become managing general partner, with executive vice president Larry Baer rising to president, Magowan told the San Francisco Chronicle. Magowan said his primary reason for standing down was to spend more time with his family and that criticism of him, for the team's recent performances and from the Mitchell Report into drug abuse in the sport, had no role in his decision.
