Werth in record hitting display; Philadelphia defeats Toronto

PHILADELPHIA -- Jayson Werth homered in his first three at-bats and tied a Philadelphia Phillies record with eight RBIs in a 10-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball interleague play Friday.

Werth had a chance to tie the major league record of four homers in a game, but he fouled out to first base in the seventh inning.

He became the 18th Phillies player to record three homers in a game and the first since 2006.

The eight RBIs tied a franchise record held by four players, most recently accomplished by Mike Schmidt in 1976.

Padres 6, Mariners 4 In Seattle, Brian Giles had four hits to lead San Diego over Seattle.

Twins 4, Rockies 2 In Denver, Nick Blackburn pitched seven strong innings to steer Minnesota past Colorado. Delmon Young doubled twice and scored two runs for the Twins before closer Joe Nathan remained perfect in 13 save opportunities.
