Football: Adelaide claim controversial win over Roar

Brisbane, Australia -- Lowly Adelaide United scored a controversial 2-1 win over fourth placed Brisbane Roar in the Australian A-League on Sunday.

With the scores locked at 1-1 in the fifth minute of extra time, Roar goalkeeper Michael Theo was given a straight red card for elbowing Adelaide's Dylan McGowan in the face.

Referee Stephen Lucas awarded Adelaide a penalty, despite McGowan clearly fouling Theo in the lead-up by holding on to the Brisbane keeper from behind as he tried to release his arms to throw the ball.

With Brisbane having already made their three substitutions, midfielder Thomas Kristensen pulled on the gloves for the spot kick but was unable to keep Sergio Cirio's penalty out.

Earlier Senegalese striker Papa Diawara scored his first A-League goal to put Adelaide ahead before the goal was cancelled out by Jamie Maclaren's 14th of the season.

The Roar remain in fourth spot on the ladder but missed an opportunity to close the gap on third-placed Melbourne City, who thumped Newcastle 4-0 on Saturday.

Western Sydney Wanderers consolidated sixth place on the ladder with a 3-1 home win over Wellington Phoenix, all but ending the New Zealand side's hopes of making the finals.
